The problem of ethnocultural characteristics of the population of fortresses on the Shilka River in TransBaikal Region

Large-scale field surveys and excavations that have been carried out for more than fifteen years in the basin of the middle and lower reaches of the Shilka River, in the southeastern part of the Trans-Baikal Territory, have provided new data on the ethnogenetic history of the population of the region, which previously was overlooked by archaeologists for many decades. There was established a source base, for the first time concerning this area of the Trans-Baikal region, aimed at the exploration of the process of cultural adaptation of Mohe groups, migrating from Western Amur region, across the new territory, characterised by natural features as well as a diverse cultural environment.
The cultural background of migrants is amongst the first determined by the distinctive characteristics of the specimens of the pottery collection. The presence of Troitsky type ceramics of Mohe culture is distinguished. The material evidence collected at the research sites specifies the process of cultural and economic adaptation of the Troitsky Mohe in a new environment and also displays their interactions with the local population.
