Features of the interaction of two different scales separated flow using thermographic visualization

One of the most effective ways to manage dynamic and thermal characteristics of the sep-arated flow behind such an obstacle as a back-facing step or transverse elongated cavity is con-sidered in the paper. For this purpose, a small obstacle mounted upstream and affecting the vor-tex structures and heat transfer in the recirculation region. This issue was partially discussed in [1-4].
This paper deals with the characteristics of separated flow behind the back-facing step, in-teracting with the separated flow behind a turbulator, installed in front of the step. The turbula-tor height is much less than the step height. The turbulator is a transverse rib, adjacent to the wall with a gap between them. Moreover, three types of split ribs, having the three-dimensional effect, were used. One split rib had the transverse cuts with a width of 5 mm in 20 mm, the sec-ond rib had the cuts of 5 mm in 5 mm, and the third rib had 10-mm cuts in 10 mm. The tem-perature and pressure fields as well as distributions of heat transfer and pressure coefficients downstream from the step were measured.
